MP4 Conveter

Convert WMV to MP4

Introduction

Wondershare Video Converter Ultimate is capable of handling forty-six different video and audio file types, ranging from DVD files to flash videos optimized for sites like YouTube and Vimeo. This guide will focus on converting WMV files to MP4 files.

While the Xbox 360 and laptops with the Windows operating system can easily handle WMV files, there are several popular media devices, such as the iPad and PlayStation 3, that do not support the WMV file format. In order to play these files on such devices, they must first be converted to the MP4 format. The easiest and most efficient method of doing this is by using Wondershare Video Converter Ultimate.

How to Convert

Step 1: Installation

Before you begin converting your files, you must first download the program from http://www.wondershare.com/pro/video-converter-ultimate.html. Select "For Windows " if you are using Windows 7/XP/Vista and "For Mac" if you are using Mac OS X 10.5, 10.6, 10.7, or 10.8 Mountain Lion. From there, simply double-click the installation file to run it. Once installed, the program will open and you can select the videos you want to convert.

Step 2: Before You Start

Before you select the files, however, you should first set the preferences that are listed in the "Preferences" tab under the "Tools" drop-down menu.

When the program is converting videos, it puts the videos in a temporary directory. While you can change this directory to anywhere you want, most users will want to leave this setting alone because they will never need access to the temporary files.

If you want the program to run in a language other than English, select the language from the drop-down menu. Your other language options are Simplified Chinese and Traditional Chinese.

If your processor has multiple cores, you can select how many of them will be used in converting the video (the default is the total number of cores your processor has, you may wish to use fewer cores if you need to have other applications running during the conversion process).

By default, any converted videos that used an Apple device as its profile will be automatically added to iTunes once the conversion process is complete. If iTunes is not installed on your computer, this option does nothing.

If you have already converted a video file to a specific file type and then you do it again, checking the "Overwrite existing files" box will delete the old converted video and replace it with the newer version. When this box is unchecked, a new file with the same name as an existing file will be renamed automatically.

Finally, you can decide when the program should check for updates. By default, it checks for updates once a week. To make sure your software is always up to date, you can change this setting to "Every Day." Alternately, if you have no desire for the program to ever update, you can set it to "Never."

Once you are satisfied with the program's settings, you can select the videos you wish to convert.

Step 3: Importing the Video

When the program is open, you can select videos to convert by either dragging and dropping them into the large square area on the left or by clicking the button at the top of the screen marked "File." The files can be taken from anywhere on your computer, or from an attached device like an iPod or an external hard drive. If you wish to select multiple files to convert, you can hold down the CTRL button (or the Command button if you are on a Mac) while clicking each file you want to select. If you want to select all the files in a folder, press CTRL+A (or Command+A on a Mac) to select every file.

Once added to the list, the files can be deleted by hovering over them with your mouse and clicking the X that appears on the right side. The order of the files to be converted can also be changed, either by dragging the files into the desired order or by using the arrow buttons that appear with the mouse hovers over the video.

You can change what the output file will be called by clicking the name that is located above the time. If the file has built-in subtitles or multiple audio tracks, one of each can be selected to keep via the drop-down menus on the left side of the screen.

The right half of the screen shows a preview of the selected video, and screen shots can be taken by clicking the camera button. They can be saved as either JPEG files or BMP files, and the folder they are saved to can be either accessed or changed via the drop-down menu next to the camera icon. Screen shots may only be taken while the video preview is playing.

When you have loaded all of the files you wish to convert, it is time to specify what file type they should become.

Step 4: Selecting the Profile and Settings

If you do not wish to change any of the default settings, you can select the profile from the drop-down menu on the main screen. Otherwise, once the videos have been loaded into the program, select any of the files you loaded and click the button marked "Advanced..." to set the format and change the video settings. Click the drop-down menu marked "Profile" and then select the section labeled "Common Video." Click "MP4 Video" to set the target format to MP4. If you intend on watching the video on an iPod, cell phone, or other mobile device, you can select that device from the "Device" section for a profile that is optimized for that specific device.

For the most part, the default settings will suffice. However, you can change the settings to increase or decrease the resolution, frame rate, and bit rate of the video. Additionally, you can change the sample rate, number of channels, and bit rate of the audio. If you need to split the video into smaller pieces, that can be done by checking the "Split" box and then choosing the split the file either by size or by time.

By default, the box labeled "Apply to all" is checked. While this box is marked, any changes made to the settings of one video in the queue are made to all of the videos on the queue. If you wish to change the settings for individual videos, uncheck this box. Then any changes made to the settings of one video will not be reflected in the settings of the other videos.

If you wish to further adjust your video, proceed to the next section. Otherwise, skip to step five.

Step 5 (optional): Additional Tweaking

In addition to file conversion, Wondershare Video Converter Ultimate offers several video editing tools, including rotating, cropping, filtering, adding a watermark, and adding subtitles. These tools are located in the Edit menu, under "Video Edit."

The main section of this tool collection is a feature that allows you to select what area of the video is to be shown. To change what is shown, resize the dotted box on the left side of the screen until you are satisfied with what is shown on the right side of the screen. The buttons directly underneath the two video sections allow the video to be rotated 900counter-clockwise and flipped both horizontally and vertically.

The Crop tab further extends the functionality of the upper boxes, allowing you to specify the exact size of the box and use the arrow keys to move it exactly where you want it. When specifying the exact aspect ratio, the "Keep Aspect Ratio" box can be used to ensure that the old resolution and the new resolution will appear the same when viewed in fullscreen. Cropping can also be done to set the aspect ratio of the video, either to 4:3 or 16:9.

The Effect tab allows you to adjust the brightness, contrast, saturation, and volume of the clip via slider bars. The video can be set to black and white, embossed, inverted colors, or sepia, and there are several deinterlacing options.

The watermark tab allows you to protect your videos from theft by adding a watermark, either text-based or image-based. You can select your own image or have your text watermark say whatever you want. You can pick the font and color, as well as determining where and how big the watermark should be.

The Subtitle file lets you add subtitles to your video, provided you already have a subtitle file in either the SRT, ASS, or SSA file formats. These subtitles can be customized to be different colors, fonts, sizes, and locations on the screen.

Also under the "Edit" menu is the "Trim" feature, which allows you to shorten the clip if you so desire. Combined with the "Duplicate" feature, which creates a duplicate of the selected clip in the queue, these two commands let you combine different effects in ways that would otherwise not be possible.

Finally, still under the "Edit" menu, is the option to "Merge into One File," which can be useful if you have many small clips that need to be combined to make a large clip. When this option is selected, every video in the queue is set to be merged with the other clips in the order in which it is listed in the queue.

Step 6 (optional): Selecting a Destination

By default, videos are saved to the Output subfolder of the "Wondershare Video Converter Ultimate" directory of your Documents folder. To select a different destination folder, click the button marked "..." and select the desired location. If the desired location does not exist on your computer (say, you want a "Converted Videos" folder in your "My Videos" folder), simply navigate to where the new folder should be, click the "Make New Folder" button, and give it whatever name you want. Once the destination has been selected, click "OK" and you can start the conversion process.

Step 7: Converting WMV to MP4

Now that the desired WMV files are loaded, it has been decided that they should become MP4 files, and a destination has been determined, it is time to convert the files. To do this, all you have to do is click the blue "Convert" button on the bottom right corner of the screen. If you are using an unregistered version of the software, you will see a popup that asks iterates the reasons to buy the software. If you want to buy the program, click the gold "Buy Now" box. Otherwise, click the grey "Continue" box and the conversion process will begin. You can stop or pause the conversion at any point if you need to do so. All of the videos will start converting at the same time, and a few seconds later a message will appear saying that the tasks have been finished. At this point, you can go to the folder where the converted videos are stored by clicking the "Open Output" button, or you can go back to the program by clicking "OK." The converted videos are now able to be added to iTunes or played on the PlayStation 3. (By default, any videos converted with an Apple product profile will automatically be added to iTunes if it is installed.)

In the event that you wish to convert additional videos, first remove the recently-converted videos that are already in the queue by either hovering over them with the mouse and clicking the X that appears, or selecting a video with the mouse and pressing the DELETE key. Also, "Clear all" can be selected from the Edit menu. Once the queue is clear, the process may be started over.

No one needs to edit video, they do it so they can tell the story better. I haven't found a more affordable editor/converter that does so much.
